TERRASZA BCN 2024: the Event
With its second event in Barcelona dedicated to outdoor design this October, TERRASZA strengthens the concept of exterior design. From October 16 to 26, the phygital platform organized an industrial design exhibition, a series of events and gatherings, and a Mediterranean-inspired showcase that celebrated the grandeur of craftsmanship and Design Art, aiming to foster synergies and exchanges that encourage dialogue and reflection on lifestyles and creative challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective.
Barcelona is the ideal hub city for the development of an event dedicated to outdoor living. TERRASZA BCN 2024 represented an unprecedented opportunity for professionals and design enthusiasts to explore spaces, products, and events related to outdoor living. Conceived as a 'business to buyers' event and organized as part of the OFF program of the Barcelona Design Week, TERRASZA BCN 2024 consists of multiple key moments:
• From October 17 to 20: Expo/market on the magnificent FX Barcelona Film School terrace located in Poble Nou, with views of some of the city’s most emblematic architectures. Brands and collections for outdoor spaces, produced by leading companies in collaboration with designers from around the world were presented.
• On the same dates and location, the MARE NOSTRUM ART DESIGN exhibition, curated by Mariona Rubio Sabatés with the support of A-FAD, celebrated the greatness of craftsmanship and Design Art by relating it to the Mediterranean—a lifestyle ideal and ethical model, a timeless metaphor for the good life, for happiness. A selection of over 50 artists and designers responsible for safeguarding and renewing the Mediterranean legacy, through craftsmanship and design. From emerging talents to established figures, this collection offered a rich source of inspiration for professionals to carry out the best terrace and outdoor space projects.
• From October 16 to 26: A circuit of showrooms, garden centers and other spaces in the city, aiming to promote synergies and exchanges that foster dialogue and reflection on lifestyles and creative challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective (digital map). For example, the guided tours of the hydroponic gardens created by Tectum Garden.
As an OFF event of BDW 2024, "Design for Human Future," TERRASZA presented a project reflecting the theme of water: Leave Plastics to Arts is an exhibition by artist Xavi Muñoz created to introduce the social awareness project ¡aiguame! by TERRASZA, a circuit of bars for eco-hydration, where people can refill their own water bottles and stop purchasing plastic bottles.
The TERRASZA BCN 2024 event has been supported by the brands involved Artemide, Bover, Cosentino, Davide Groppi, Ezpeleta, iSiMar, Ksar Living, Musola, Novara Outdoor Kitchen… and by A-FAD, ADI-FAD, Barcelona Beer Company, DIOS Design Institute of Spain, FX Archiviz, FX Barcelona Film School, iF Design, LCI Barcelona, Oblicuo, Paxton Barcelona Hotel, Todobarro and Yzaguirre.

TERRASZA, A PLATFORM FOR OUTDOOR DESIGN
TERRASZA is a new reality, both offline and online, that aims to elevate outdoor design to a real category of thought and market with international relevance. It was born in Barcelona, at the heart of the design and outdoor living manifesto city, and its name, TERRA-SZ-A, is a play on letters: as a tribute to the Catalan capital, where the word "terrace" (terraza), an emblem of the pleasure of gathering with friends and family in a cozy outdoor space, is written with two S's; and to Spanish, where it is written with a Z, as in Italian, to emphasize the origin of the project’s founders.
A new issue of the TERRASZA VIEWS magazine, with new illustrations by Ángela Léon, will be printed and distributed for free throughout the city, featuring a map connecting various locations including showrooms, hotels, public and private spaces, offering dedicated showcases, installations, and themed cultural gatherings.
TERRASZA’s scientific director, Juan Cabello Arribas (Associate Professor at IE University, Spain; architectural researcher in the practice of Project Architecture linked to ecological mediation; and postdoctoral researcher at DPA PUC-Rio), invites us to establish a direct mediation between the world of design and ecological thinking, raising awareness among both creators and brands dedicated to the production of outdoor objects and materials to pay greater attention to the issues related to the environmental changes we are causing on the planet. As stated in its Manifesto, TERRASZA is committed to promoting synergies and exchanges that foster dialogue and reflection on topics such as ecology, lifestyles, and creative challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective. Design and architecture, art and science, creativity and ecology must go hand in hand.
After October in Barcelona, in 2025 TERRASZA will continue its itinerant journey, heading to the Madrid Design Festival in February, the Mallorca Design Days in March, and returning to the Milano Design Week in April.
