Live Plastics to Arts

Part of the initiative ¡aiguame! by TERRASZA

October 17-20, 2024 – TERRASZA BCN 2024 - Barcelona Design Week OFF event

FX Barcelona Film School, C. de Pujades, 112, Sant Martí, 08005 Barcelona

From October 17 to 20 at FX Barcelona Film School, as part of the OFF events of BDW 2024, TERRASZA presents the exhibition "Leave Plastics to Arts" by artist Xavi Muñoz, created to introduce the social awareness project ¡aiguame! by TERRASZA. This initiative promotes an eco-hydration circuit at bars, where you can refill your own canteen and avoid purchasing plastic bottles.

The project not only aims to change consumption habits but also to promote a more creative and environmentally respectful vision. It reflects the theme of "Design for Human Future" of the 2024 Barcelona Design Week, which will celebrate its 19th edition from October 16 to 26, focusing on water.

¡aiguame! by TERRASZA is presented as an innovative initiative that seeks to reduce the use of PET plastic bottles by encouraging the use of refillable canteens with filtered or mineral water available in bars and restaurants across the city. This proposal not only addresses environmental issues but also connects with art through an initial exhibition by artist Xavi Muñoz, to be followed by other artists' exhibitions in future editions of TERRASZA, dedicated to raising awareness about plastic pollution.

Microplastics, Environment, and Health
The average person consumes, drinks, and breathes between 78,000 and 121,000 microplastic particles per year (an underestimated figure). According to an analysis conducted by Will media of 26 studies worldwide, the source that introduces the most microplastics into our bodies is water bottled in plastic containers. The study results suggest that avoiding the consumption of bottled water could effectively reduce our exposure to microplastics.

The prevalence of microplastics in ecosystems is increasing, so to safeguard our health and that of our ecosystems, we must minimize the production and use of plastics.
The main objective of the project is to promote the use of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic bottles, highlighting the positive impact on the environment and health, as well as the creative potential of these materials in the artistic field.

The Exhibition "Leave Plastics to Arts" by Xavi Muñoz
Xavi Muñoz's exhibition "Leave Plastics to Arts" complements the project by showcasing the creative dual uses of PET plastic water bottles. Through his works, Muñoz transforms these everyday objects into artistic pieces, demonstrating their potential beyond their useful life as water containers. This artistic perspective not only raises public awareness about plastic pollution and health risks but also inspires innovative ways of reuse and recycling.

¡aiguame! by TERRASZA: Refillable Canteens
Residents and tourists will be able to refill their canteens at participating establishments, marked with specific signs for the initiative, or by purchasing a canteen with the ¡Aiguame! by TERRASZA logo. These venues will offer quality filtered or mineral water, encouraging the abandonment of disposable plastic bottles.

Expected Impact
Reduction of Plastic Waste: By decreasing the consumption of PET bottles, the amount of plastic waste in the city will be significantly reduced.
Awareness: The combination of art and sustainability in Xavi Muñoz's exhibition will educate and motivate citizens to adopt more responsible practices.
Convenience: With easy access to filtered water in numerous establishments, the transition to a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle is facilitated.
