Matapalo is a unique brand that offers handmade composite textile pots, designed to enhance both the aesthetics and health of plants. Thanks to their innovative textile technology, these pots enable plants to develop a dense root system by shielding them from excessive heat. But the advantages don’t end there: Matapalo pots are waterproof, durable, and resistant to outdoor weather conditions, making them versatile for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Beyond their practical function, these pots bring vibrancy, beauty, and a splash of color to any setting.
The Birth of Matapalo
Founded just a year ago in Algeria, south of the Mediterranean, Matapalo was born out of the creative vision of Lilia Zenine. An interior designer by trade, Zenine launched the brand after returning to her home country, having spent years studying and working in the design hubs of Milan and Barcelona.
“Of all the places I have lived, even for a short time, I have always included a small plant in my decor. But I often found the options for pots to be quite limited in terms of design and originality,” Zenine explains. This realization led her to embark on a journey of research and experimentation in sewing workshops and greenhouses, culminating in the creation of Matapalo.
The brand’s first collection focused on simplicity, with pots available in solid colors. However, Zenine’s passion for art and design soon pushed her to transform these pots into artistic objects. By collaborating with graphic designers, Matapalo introduced the “Urban Adorn” collection, created in partnership with Studio Chimbo. This collection is a graphic tribute to the architectural heritage of Algiers, showcasing the brand’s commitment to blending functionality with cultural storytelling.
Innovation Meets Art: The Corcovado Collection
Inspired by the lush jungle of Matapalo in Costa Rica, the brand took another leap with its “Corcovado” collection. This couture line reimagines plant pots as garments for plants, incorporating bold shapes, fringes, spikes, and unique personalities. Each pot in this collection channels the vibrant energy of nature while celebrating color and creativity.
A Global Presence
In just a short span of time, Matapalo has gained international recognition. The brand was invited to participate in the Algerian-French Design Biennial in Algiers last April and was also selected for the “Underground” event at Barcelona Design Week. These milestones have underscored the brand’s inclusive and unifying appeal, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, ages, and professions through a shared love for design, plants, and pots.
Sustainability at Heart
Matapalo’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its upcycling efforts. The brand repurposes fabric scraps to create derivative products such as tote bags, laptop pouches, and, coming soon in 2025, vinyl bags for DJs and audiophiles. This seamless integration of design, sustainability, and music exemplifies Matapalo’s dynamic artistic direction.
Looking Ahead
With its innovative approach to plant care, artistic collaborations, and eco-conscious initiatives, Matapalo is redefining the way we think about plant pots. Whether adorning an indoor corner or an outdoor terrace, these pots serve as a testament to the power of design to inspire and unite. As the brand continues to grow, its journey promises to remain as colorful and vibrant as the pots themselves.
